The best Kool-Aid colors:
Berry Blue = blue
1/2 pkt. Cherry = red
1/8 t. Cherry = pink
1/4 pkt. Grape = purple
Lemon Lime = green
Pineapple = yellow
Orange = uh, orange
Mango = yellow-orange
Other flavors tend to be washed out. Pink Lemonade makes an eerily real flesh-colored dough. Food coloring doesn't work as well.
This recipe was refined during the 10 years Mary Jo worked in nursery.
- 1 c. white flour
- 1/2 c. salt
- 1 package unsweetened Kool Aid (for color and scent)
- 2 T. lemon juice (bottled, unsweetened)
- 1 T. oil (avoid peanut oil as some are allergic)
Mix flour and salt in a medium saucepan. In a liquid measuring cup thoroughly mix the Kool Aid and lemon juice. Add enough water to this mixture to equal one cup. Pour mixture into saucepan with flour and salt and add the oil.
Stir continuously with a wooden spoon with pan over medium to high heat. The mixture will first combine and as it heats up, will coagulate into a ball. This goes fairly rapidly, so don't leave it to "warm up." Continue stirring, pressing the dough into the sides of the pan so it dries out fairly well. Turn out on counter and knead it well as soon as it is cool enough to handle. Let cool several more minutes and put into a ziplock bag. This dough will last several months without problems.
